We've been here 4 weeks now and to be honest, we're pretty pleased. We are both doers, we don’t like to sit around when a job needs doing, so we have been doing 7-8 hour days most days with the odd 10 hr day if there is a job that ‘just needs finishing’. Apart from the highlights I have shared, we have been here working away every day. This week one of our lovely neighbours came to see how we were and spotted our door. Apparently in the early morning we can occasionally hear the lions roar from Sandown zoo here and he wondered if Casper had popped by. I don’t remember him visiting, but it does look like it! Either that, or one of the Dinosaurs from down in the bay.
This is where we are today, the bedrooms are almost ready for painting, please God let them nearly be ready, I can’t do much more sanding and filling (just need to remove all the radiators to get behind them and put insulation in the walls before plumbing in new ones). The living room is awaiting its walls sanding where they have been filled, its window removal, new patio doors, and the ceiling Artexing (see previous blog). The doors need sanding, filling, door frames making (they are not really functioning), new lock/handles on all doors etc.
Did I mention we removed a radiator in the bedroom yesterday as a test? To be honest it wasn't actually attached to the wall, it seems fixing it to the dodgy plasterboard, not the wooden noggins was not sufficient to hold it. I was very anxious about this, but Ian seemed so confident it would be OK, and it was – he only told me afterwards he too was anxious, but what was the worst that could happen? The whole system drains into the floor? It bodes well for us replacing all the other radiators.
The kitchen needs artexing, and almost everything else that will make it a functioning kitchen, but the former electrician neighbour was most impressed with Ian’s kitchen electrics, so that’s good news. The hall needs bit more filling and sanding, and then there is the bathroom to tackle in its entirety. A bit of flooring, skirting, woodwork painting, add a wardrobe to build and we will be ready to move in.
We’ve done so much, and only by looking back can we appreciate quite how much, so a 4 week review is a good thing. Maybe by Christmas we will have time to visit Casper and see if he was impressed by our progress.
PS I wrote this before Lockdown 2 was announced, so who knows when we will see Casper!
